Director of Recreation Department
The Town of Barre is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Recreation to oversee all aspects of our recreation programs. Barre Town is a suburban to rural middle-class community with a population of 7,923. Barre Town Recreation operates and maintains six neighborhood playgrounds, three bike paths, two picnic areas, a town forest, a large recreation complex with five athletic fields, a track, a skate park, a picnic shelter, and volleyball, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts. Facilities are maintained by a summer season crew of three people and contracted mowing services. This is a 40 hour per week, year-round position.
The Director of Recreation is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating recreational activities and events that cater to diverse age groups and interests. This role requires strong leadership skills, creativity, and a passion for promoting community engagement and well-being through recreational activities.
This is an administrative and management position with responsibilities that include developing and implementing comprehensive recreation programs. Plan and coordinate recreational activities and events for various age groups and interests, including but not limited to sports leagues, and special events. Recruit, train, and supervise recreation staff and volunteers. Manage the recreation budget and resources effectively. Collaborate with other departments and community stakeholders to enhance recreational offerings and promote participation. Ensure the safety and well-being of participants by adhering to relevant regulations and best practices. Evaluate the effectiveness of recreation programs and initiatives and make recommendations for improvement. Stay current with trends and developments in the field of recreation and incorporate innovative ideas into program planning.
A degree in Recreation Management, Sports Management, or a related field is preferred, or considerable related experience in recreational programming or a related field. Having supervisory experience is a plus. Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire staff and volunteers. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with community members. Knowledge of budget management and resource allocation. Familiarity with relevant regulations and safety standards in recreational programming. Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities. Passion for promoting community well-being and engagement through recreational activities.
The salary range is from $55,000 to $65,000. Excellent benefits include health, dental, life and short-term disability insurance, and a defined benefit retirement plan through the VT Municipal Employees Retirement System. Generous paid leave is provided to include vacation, sick, personal, holidays, and floating holidays.
