General Purpose
This position performs professional librarian duties to assure the planning and direction of activities within 2 assigned library departments: Reference librarian and or Technical Service Cataloging Librarian. Approximately 50% of the time is spent at the public service Reference (Help) desk and 50% of the time is spent in the Technical Services Department doing cataloging. This position’s schedule is Tuesday through Saturday.
Union Affiliation: American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees.

- Assist in developing policies and procedures relating to reference and cataloging departments
- Assist in developing goals for the reference and cataloging departments
- Assist in writing grants for reference and cataloging services.
- Assist in compiling reference and cataloging statistics for Vermont Public Library Report and Minimum Standards for Vermont Public Libraries.
- Maintains operation and procedure records as required.
- Uses personal computer, current software and other common office equipment.
- Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
- Uses problem solving skills to assist in determining priorities, finding timely solutions to departmental or system-wide issues and providing quality customer service
- Improves minimum one (1) work flow or work process each year
- Perform light custodial and grounds maintenance tasks as needed.
- Provides quality assistance to staff by seeking to understand their needs and providing relevant support. Remains calm even in stressful conditions.
- Maintains a positive approach while doing daily tasks and when faced with adversity. Encourages and recognizes the contribution of others.
- Looks for ways to provide quality support to promote Library services.
Reference Librarian
- Assist patrons in the use of the library collections through reference interview and instruction in the use of public automated catalog
- Assists patrons online resources , technology troubleshooting, printing, tech devices as the connect to library services, appropriate references materials and other patron needs as they evolve.
- Monitor the main reading room to maintain decorum according to the library’s policies and rules. Addresses patron behavior that deviates from the library ordinance as needed.
- Answer requests for information by telephone, email, chat or in-person (or in any other mode of communication), ranging from quick fact-finding to in-depth search of library resources, community resources, as well as state or national information databases on a broad range of subjects.
- Performs Tech Center opening and closing procedures as required.
- Tallies relevant statistics and creates statistical reports as needed.
- Provide a variety of patron services using a fully integrated automated library system, including but not limited to; entering patron data, such as name and address and issuing library cards; recording changes of address/name and using the notes field to record special circumstances, charging library materials in-and-out.
- Searching the automated catalog to place holds; and process reserves and patron requests for information; renewing library books and materials for patrons in-house or over the telephone using ILS system. Use and help patrons with the OPAC as needed
- Answer phone calls, phone requests, take and distribute messages
- Research and prepare order form for patron requests and provide correct information for Selectors or inter-library loan department.
- Address violations of library rules or other conduct affecting library or engage Library security or supervisor when necessary. Assists with trespass notices as needed.
- May be assigned group leader when needed.
Cataloging Librarian
- Select books for several broad areas of the library collections as assigned.
- Provide support to Technical Services & Digital Content Manager in the interviewing, evaluating and hiring of employees for the reference and cataloging departments.
- Evaluate and select library materials using professional review sources, patron recommendations and professional judgment.
- Perform original and copy cataloging for materials in all formats following national standards (AACR2, MARC, RDA) and classify and provide subject access to materials using national (DDC), LC subject headings and local classification systems.
- Maintain cataloging and authority databases.
- Perform physical processing for all materials.
- Assists in budget planning and preparation related to acquisitions, cataloging, and materials processing.
- Recommends the adoption of bibliographic maintenance standards and authorities in an automated environment, develops procedures for processing all library materials.
- Assists in drafting bibliographic maintenance and automation policies, as assigned.
Non-Essential Job Functions:

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements
- Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science or related field.
- ALA accredited MLS and Preferred.
- Two (2) years relevant library experience in a public setting or State of Vermont librarian certification plus five (5) years relevant experience.
- Knowledge of contemporary bibliographic-maintenance standards and practice, including the Anglo-American cataloging rules, Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress subject headings, OCLC/MARC records, and library automation.
- Experience in computer technology; database and internet searching.
- Ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a professional and courtesy manner.
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of professional public library work including in-depth knowledge of books and reference sources.
- Working knowledge of computer: word processing, Internet navigation and familiarity with automated library systems.
- Ability to obtain a working knowledge of all department operations and procedures and relevant City polices.
- Ability to keep abreast of new techniques and trends in librarianship.
- Working knowledge of local government as well as local organizations and agencies providing community services and information.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing effectively.
- Ability to assess volatile or potentially dangerous situations with patrons and follow library procedures.
- Knowledge of CD Rom database search, online, with understand how to research on an online environment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of current literature and collection development.
- Demonstrate wide general knowledge and familiarity with current events.
