SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER 

Full Time, Non-Exempt Position

COMPENSATION: $64521-$81827 based on yrs of LE experience

DEFINITION OF POSITION

This is a lead level law enforcement position assigned to the BUUSD schools located within Barre City during the standard school year. This position is responsible for full law enforcement duties commensurate with a Senior Police Officer. Officers holding a School Resource Officer (SRO) position need to work with a high degree of initiative and independence under broad program guidelines and general supervision of a sergeant. The SRO will be further monitored by, and receive day-to-day direction and assignments from BUUSD school administrators as appropriate.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

Ø Assists in making schools a safe and secure environment

Ø Performs law enforcement duties and responsibilities by taking appropriate action when a crime occurs or when emergency or immediate law enforcement action is needed

Ø Operate as a liaison between the police department and school district and assist in dealing with issues of mutual interest to both entities.

Ø Make home visits and coordinate school services with the home in cases that regard legal issues and delinquency matters

Ø Participate and assist in prevention programs within the schools and community to include utilizing other police personnel to achieve program goals.

Ø Work to build rapport with school students and staff while retaining respect of the position

Ø Respond to routine requests for assistance and emergency situations in the schools. Function both as a member of the school safety team and emergency planning independently at incidents of uncertain duration

Ø Attend staff/parent/administrative meetings as appropriate/when requested

Ø Assist in the development and implementation of safety, substance abuse and other curriculum.

Ø Present instruction to students and staff as appropriate/when requested in areas concerning safety and/or other related topics and areas of expertise

Ø Be a resource to staff and students and be available for conferences, counseling or questions

Ø Be visible and interactive with students and staff

Ø Act as a liaison with other officers and the schools regarding investigations which initiate in or outside of the schools and involve students of the schools

Ø Develop/assist in developing plans and strategies to prevent and/or minimize dangerous situations concerning students and the schools

Ø Maintain radio contact with the Emergency Communications Center as well as the schools served

Ø Issue parking ticket violations as appropriate relative to the schools

Ø Answer questions, give general assistance as needed

Ø Become familiar with local resources and agencies that assist with youth and families and make referrals when requested or as appropriate

Ø Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Ø Ability to successfully complete the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) Basic School Resource Officer Course

Ø Demonstrating advanced knowledge, skills and abilities in a specialized support service through training

Ø Working knowledge of statutes, ordinances and criminal law, investigation and crime prevention methods

Ø Ability to lead and motivate others in both routine and crisis situations.

Ø Ability to work well with others

Ø Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Ø Ability to analyze emergency situations, apply first aid and/or request emergency fire and rescue services

Ø Ability to complete routine forms and records

Ø Ability to apply law enforcement methods and procedures and take other appropriate action as needed dictates

Ø Ability to handle sensitive school and public contacts

Ø Ability to understand, demonstrate and implement problem solving techniques based on the concepts and tenets of community-oriented policing

Ø Must have personal integrity, pay attention to details, be emotionally stable, and physically fit to perform all the duties of the Police Officer position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ø Certified Level III Police Officer (or equivalent, recognized by the VCJC)

Ø 3 years minimum Level III/Senior Police Officer (or equivalent) experience
