Description

The Town of Westford is seeking a Dog Warden. The position is a stipend position that reports directly to the Town Administrator and Selectboard. 

Duties include
Enforcing local laws: Administering the specific guidelines outlined in the town's ordinance around dogs.

  • Licensing enforcement: Working alongside the Town Clerk to ensure residents register and license their dogs annually, and following up on lists of delinquent licenses.
  • Issuing citations: Levying municipal ordinance tickets, fines, or written warnings to owners who violate leash, noise, or registration laws. 

Complaint Response & Handling

  • Responding to complaints: Investigating community reports regarding loose or stray dogs, excessive barking, and property damage.
  • Apprehension and impoundment: Humanely capturing stray, roaming, or abandoned domestic dogs and transporting them to the town's designated pound or contracted humane society.
  • Managing dangerous animals: Handling calls regarding sick, injured, or vicious animals that pose an immediate risk to public safety. 

Public Health & Safety

  • Bite investigations: Investigating domestic animal bites, coordinating with the Vermont Department of Health when necessary, and ensuring proper quarantine protocols are followed.
  • De-escalating conflict: Dealing tactfully but firmly with emotional or uncooperative pet owners to resolve public safety hazards and achieve ordinance compliance. 

Administration & Reporting

  • Record keeping: Maintaining a detailed log of all emergency calls, complaints, animal status updates, and owner communications.
  • Selectboard reporting: Preparing and delivering comprehensive activity reports to the town Selectboard, often on an annual or quarterly basis.
