Fleet Mechanic
The Town of St. Johnsbury is seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanic to join our Department of Public Works Team. This position is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of a diverse fleet of municipal vehicles and equipment, helping ensure the safe and efficient delivery of essential public services to our community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on trucks, loaders, excavators, snowplows, sanders, mowers, and other municipal equipment.
· Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system issues.
· Conduct vehicle and equipment inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards.
· Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
· Order parts and manage inventory of supplies and equipment.
· Respond to equipment breakdowns and emergency repairs as needed.
· Assist with fleet management and equipment replacement planning.
· Operate public works equipment as needed.
Qualifications:
· Attention to detail
· Problem-solving skills
· Ability to multitask
· Advanced knowledge and experience in maintaining and repairing heavy trucks and equipment.
· Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and diagnostic tools.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Valid commercial driver's license required
· Welding and fabrication experience is a plus
· Pass a criminal background check
· Ability to respond during emergency events
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to read and interpret service manuals, technical diagrams, and schematics.
· Working knowledge of occupational safety practices.
· Ability to perform physically demanding work in various weather conditions.
· Ability to become certified in Vermont to inspect vehicles
Compensation and Benefits:
The Town of St. Johnsbury offers a competitive salary ranging from $28.08 an hour to $29.13 an hour based on qualifications and experience, along with an excellent benefits package that includes:
