The Town of Barre is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Fleet Service Manager. The Fleet Service Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Public Works Garage and managing the maintenance and repair of the Town’s fleet and equipment. Major duties include scheduling and assigning service work, tracking preventative maintenance, coordinating repairs, maintaining accurate equipment and service records, managing parts and supply inventories, and monitoring the use of bulk materials such as fuels, sand, salt, and chemicals. This position is also responsible for helping maintain clean, organized, and safe workspaces at the Public Works Garage, assisting with employee timecard preparation, tracking job costs, coordinating with vendors, and ensuring that work orders and service documentation are completed accurately and in a timely manner. The ideal candidate will be comfortable using modern tools such as Microsoft Office, cloud-based databases, spreadsheets, and fleet management software.

 This position requires maintaining digital maintenance records for all Town-owned equipment using spreadsheets or fleet management software. Assist department heads in reviewing and evaluating equipment specifications. Organize and manage the parts room, ensuring inventory is tracked and replenished. Prioritize and schedule equipment maintenance requests using digital tools. Supervise and assign tasks to two mechanics, ensuring productivity and efficiency.

Source and procure parts and supplies as needed. Prepare and submit invoices for processing using standard accounting software. Track state inspections, insurance cards, and vehicle registrations.

Answer phones and relay messages to DPW staff. Monitor vehicle mileage and generate maintenance schedules. Coordinate with private vendors for outsourced repairs. Track and report fuel usage; manage fuel purchases. Purchase supplies for Public Works operations (e.g., signs, bulk materials). Maintain clean, organized, and safe workspaces and employee facilities.

Assist with employee timecard preparation and job accounting. Support the Director of Public Works and Highway Superintendent as needed.

 Minimum qualifications are a high school diploma or equivalent, valid driver’s license. One-year certificate from a college or technical school preferred; or three to six months of related experience and/or training; or Equivalent combination of education and experience. Municipal or public-sector experience is desirable. Class B CDL License w/tank endorsement. Usual hours are M-F, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm. The starting annual salary is $65,000-75,000.
