Vacancy Announcement for the position(s) of Communications Officer / Dispatcher Ludlow Police Department Town & Village of Ludlow, VT.
The Town and Village of Ludlow may be filling two Communications Officers (Dispatchers) within the police department. The ideal candidate shall have at least 3 years of emergency services dispatch (PD, Fire, and EMS), be certified in NCIC, or ability to gain certification. Ludlow Police Department provides 24/7 law enforcement coverage to the Town of Ludlow, Vermont. We currently staff 7 (seven) full-time officers, one part-time officer 4 (four) full-time dispatchers and three part time dispatchers.
Qualified bargaining unit employees will receive preference for vacancies in the bargaining unit. The decision to fill vacancies will be based on the person best qualified to do the job.
About the Position :
Dispatchers report directly to the Chief of Police or his/her designee. Incumbents are considered a regular full-time employee of the Town & Village of Ludlow and as such, a member of the bargaining unit represented by the United Federation of Police Officers (Union). As a condition of employment, incumbents must be members of the Union and pay Union dues monthly.
A person who has been hired by the Town or Village of Ludlow that works an average of forty (40) hours per week will serve a minimum ninety (90) day, not to exceed one-year probationary period commensurate with skills, experience, and qualifications.
Dispatchers typically work 5 (five) 8 (eight) hour shifts, with a 5% 2nd shift pay differential and a 7% 3rd shift pay differential.
Minimum qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
Ability to attend and successfully complete required training.
Possess strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
Ability to work varied hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Experience and skill in critical decision-making and problem-solving.
Must successfully pass/recently passed a background investigation.
Ability and skill to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment to effectively listen, understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Additional benefits for this position: • Annual uniform cleaning allowance of $200.00 • Uniforms and equipment supplied by the department. • Overtime opportunities for shift coverage, winter traffic control, and other special details. • Additional compensation per Union agreement.
Pay range:
Starting pay for vacancies is commensurate with skills, experience, and certifications of applicant(s). Dispatchers classification per Union agreement will follow D or D PS pay steps. For example, As of May 22,2026 Training ($23.27/hour); Steps 1-20, with D PS-1 at $25.85/hour and D PS-20 highest possible pay scale at $41.33/hour. With successful annual performance, dispatchers rate of pay will increase per step annually on July 1st, per collective bargaining agreement.
