Job Description

 Title: Highway and Solid Waste Operator

Department: Department of Public Works

Nature of work:

Performs duties related to the collection of solid waste and cart maintenance within the Department of Public Works. Performs highly skilled work involving the construction, maintenance and facility upkeep of the Towns highway infrastructure. Safely operates various pieces of equipment for waste collection/disposal, landfill operations, road maintenance, public interaction, safety compliance and attention to environmental rules.; also performs duties related as required for other divisions or departments within Public Works.

Work Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week. On-call duty hours, including weekend rotation and overtime, as required. On-Call duty requires residency in Brattleboro or an agreed upon boarding town; residency may be relieved when special circumstances exist justifying residence outside of town or bordering towns. 

Wage: FY 2026 Step 1 $22.01; Step 2 $22.90 per hour with CDL.

Supervision Received:

Receives general supervision from the division supervisor, the DPW Director, or designee,

while exercising considerable independent judgment while performing their assigned duties.

Work is subject to review during progress and upon completion.

 Supervision Exercised: None.

 Essential Responsibilities:

  • Exercises independent judgment while working in coordination with other employees.

  • Performs general laboring duties (manual labor).

  • Performs various duties required for the maintenance of Public Works facilities and equipment.

  • Perform tasks completed by the Highway Division for other municipal agencies and private enterprises.

  • Operates and maintains solid waste collection related equipment and all other Highway Division related equipment.

  • Collect, transport and dispose of solid waste.

  • Direct the public at facilities, explain rules, customer service and enforce safety/environmental regulations.

  • Occasionally the duties of other equipment operators perform as needed.

Competencies Needed:

We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills a qualifying, unless specifically stated as required.

  • Graduation from high school or any combination of schooling and in-service training and experience.

  • Possession of and ability to obtain and maintain a valid State Driver's license.

  • A CDL certification permit is preferred.

  • A CDL certification is required within 1 year from the date of hire.

  • Knowledge of or able to demonstrate ability and experience to learn purposes of common construction and maintenance tools and equipment.

  • Able to maintain basic accurate records of work performed.

  • Must be able to read and carry out written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, elected officials and other government agencies.

  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Must be able to work effectively in the absence of close supervision.

  • Must be able to learn and retain instructions, policies and procedures and continue to learn new methods and stay current within the field.

  • Ability to actively support Town diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.

 Work Environment: This is physically demanding, the employee is regularly required to use hands, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reaching. Frequently required to stand; talk or hear; walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Works outdoor or indoors as required, at times during inclement weather, working near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to hazardous environments.

The employee may be required to work early in the morning, or weekend hours dependent on workload factors in addition to normally scheduled work hours. This environment demands resilience, patience and awareness of significant physical and health risks.

The probationary period is 6-months from the date of hire.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Employee (hourly).
