About the Role
The City of Montpelier is looking for an experienced Equipment Division Supervisor to lead our Public Works Equipment Division. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who takes pride in keeping a fleet running safely and efficiently — and who knows how to bring out the best in a team of mechanics.
You'll oversee the maintenance and repair of the City's automotive, construction, and heavy equipment fleet, manage the Dog River Road facility and fuel island, and work closely with the Director of Public Works on equipment procurement and long-range budget planning.
What You'll Do
- Supervise and direct a team of mechanics, ensuring safe working conditions in the shop, offices, and fuel island
- Schedule and oversee maintenance and repair of all City-owned vehicles and equipment
- Enforce and train staff on safety procedures and policies
- Manage work orders and parts inventory
- Collaborate with vendors, consultants, and other professionals; make purchasing recommendations to the Director
- Contribute to contract bid documents and long-term equipment budget development
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or vocational school certificate
- Valid Vermont Class B Commercial Driver's License
- Tanker endorsement (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire)
- Vermont Inspection License (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire)
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical, drug test, and background check
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Experience developing municipal equipment contract bid documents
- Background in long-term equipment budget planning
Compensation & Benefits
$30.76 – $33.00/hour, depending on experience and qualifications, plus a comprehensive City benefits package.
