Nature & Scope of Position

The purpose of this job is to render Basic and Advanced Life support and emergency medical techniques to those in need of assistance; to operate and maintain assigned ambulance and station; to participate in continuing education and training related to medical and industry advancements.

This position is under the general supervision of the EMS Department Chief and Asst. Chief and to the Town Manager or designee.

 Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are considered normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the job if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Render pre-hospital emergency care according to established medical protocols.
  • Drive the ambulance to emergency scenes, transport accident victims and medical patients to hospitals.
  • Perform triage and a variety of emergency medical treatments at the Basic and Advanced Life support level.
  • Provide continuing care and treatment while enroute to an emergency medical facility; monitor and report changes in patient condition.
  • Under medical direction and following prescribed standing orders perform a variety of invasive and non-invasive therapies including but not limited to assessment and evaluation of the ill and injured, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, administration of drugs, agents and solutions, intubation and pulmonary ventilation, drawing of blood samples for analysis, application of dressing and bandages, control of shock, and immobilization of fractures, and all other skills contained within the District 4 and state protocols for Paramedics.
  • Assist and coordinate with Morrisville Volunteer Fire Department (MFD) and other emergency service agencies in rescue operations, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergency situations.
  • Maintain ambulance vehicles, equipment, and station.
  • Lead and participate in training classes for the public on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), standard first aid and emergency medical techniques.
  • Function as a preceptor for EMS students.
  • Manage radio communications during emergency and non-emergency situations professionally.
  • Keep records and logs on daily activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by EMS Chief and/or Assistant Chief.

Work Requirements

·         Paramedic certification or higher.

·         Must be able to obtain State approved CCP to comply with State EMS changes if mandated by Medical Director or EMS Chief.

·         Attend all training courses required by Department (i.e. ACLS, PALS, or PEEP, monthly department staff training) that are required per protocol changes.  Additional training will be assigned by the EMS Chief, Assistant Chief or Training Officer as needed.

·         Certified AHA CPR Instructor, or obtain status within one year, and teach approved AHA CPR courses when requested.

·         Obtain EVOC/CEVO certification within one year of hire.

·         Excellent communication skills and working well with others.

·         Maintain a professional image and appropriate EMS uniform.

·         Obtain appropriate ICS/NIMS qualifications as directed by the Town’s Emergency Management Coordinator.

·         Thorough knowledge of emergency medical response practices.

·         Must be able to accept constructive criticism.

·         Ability to deal with Town personnel and the public in a tactful, respectful manner.

Education, Training and Experience

·         Three to five years prior experience in emergency medical services.

·         Valid Driver’s License

Physical Demands/ Work Environment

 

This position takes up significant amounts of time both in the field and in the office.  When working in the field, this is a physically demanding job requiring the use of hands to operate equipment, and the ability to stand, talk, and hear.  The employee is often required to walk, sit for extended periods of time; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in inclement weather conditions.  The employee is often exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.  The employee may be required to safely lift and or move up to 125 pounds alone, or as a member of a team.

When working in the office, the employee is required to communicate frequently with the public and other staff members, operate office equipment, and move throughout the municipal offices.
