Cemetery Sexton Apprentice

The Town of Barre is hiring a Cemetery Sexton Apprentice to begin in Spring 2026, with the opportunity to advance to Cemetery Sexton in Spring 2027. This is a hands-on, outdoor position serving the Town’s three historic cemeteries and supporting families with care and professionalism.

Responsibilities: Coordinate burials and interments, including scheduling and grave preparation. Maintain cemetery records, maps, and plot ownership information. Assist families with burial arrangements and plot selection. Perform grounds maintenance (mowing, trimming, general upkeep). Ensure compliance with cemetery policies and state/local burial laws. Assist with plot sales and related paperwork. Work with the Town Clerk, funeral homes, monument companies, and the public. Attend monthly Cemetery Commission meetings and provide updates as needed.

Qualifications: High school diploma or GED.  Experience in landscaping, public works, or a similar field is preferred. Basic computer skills. Ability to work outdoors in all weather and lift up to 50 lbs. Strong communication and organizational skills. Valid driver’s license.

 Schedule & Pay: Seasonal, late April – early December. Apprentice wage: $27.50/hour. Sexton wage (upon promotion): $31.50/hour. Year-round pay option: Seasonal earnings may be spread over the full year, providing steady income during the winter months. Winter flexibility: Time off in the winter for rest, travel, family time, or seasonal/part-time work without losing income stability.
