The Town of Killington is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Director of Public Works. The Director of Public Works provides leadership and vision by managing the Town’s infrastructure, public works operations, and capital projects, while overseeing departmental budgets and programs to improve services to residents and visitors. This position is responsible for the oversight of building maintenance, solid waste, fleet services, road construction and maintenance, engineering functions, and plays a key role in the continued development of the Town’s new municipal water department and existing sewer facilities.

The Director of Public Works works closely with the Town Manager, Water Superintendent, Selectboard, and other stakeholders to deliver capital projects, administer contracts and grants, and ensure responsive and effective municipal services. This role is expected to be hands-on, balancing strategic planning with operational involvement, including personnel management, customer service, and interdepartmental coordination. The Director maintains a working knowledge of the municipal water system sufficient to respond to basic operational needs and emergency situations and to provide limited after-hours or weekend coverage as necessary, in coordination with the Water Superintendent.

Applicants should possess strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, along with comprehensive knowledge of public works operations, construction management, budgeting, and municipal administration. The ideal candidate will be comfortable supervising staff, managing consultants and contractors, responding to citizen concerns, and adapting to changing priorities in a dynamic municipal environment.

Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience), with five to ten years of experience in public administration or municipal operations. Candidates must possess, or be willing to obtain, an appropriate Public Water System Operator Certification sufficient to provide backup and emergency operational coverage. Experience managing projects within Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Districts is highly desired.

This is a full-time exempt position with a salary range of $85,000–$95,000, depending on experience and qualifications, along with a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits through the Vermont Municipal Employees Retirement System, paid leave, and additional Town benefits.
