The Town of Castleton Select Board is seeking a dedicated and community-minded individual interested in being appointed by the Select Board as an interim Town Clerk, commencing immediately and ending on Election Day in March 2026. This is a temporary position until the voters of the Town elect a new Town Clerk in March 2026. The temporary appointee can run for the elected position on the March 2026 ballot, so long as they are a legal resident of the Town of Castleton. The Town Clerk plays a vital role in the daily operations of municipal government and serves as a knowledgeable, responsive, and trusted resource for residents, officials, and state agencies.
This position requires strong organization, attention to detail, confidentiality, and a genuine commitment to public service. The Town Clerk is elected by Castleton voters and carries out the statutory responsibilities defined in Vermont law. Must be a legal resident of the Town of Castleton.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
• Administering all local, state, and federal elections in compliance with Vermont election laws; maintaining voter checklists; and coordinating election workers.• Recording, preserving, and issuing vital records, including birth, death, and marriage certificates, along with processing marriage, dog, and liquor licenses.• Overseeing the recording, indexing, and accessibility of land records and public documents for attorneys, surveyors, and residents.
• Serving on the Board of Civil Authority and Board of Abatement, and assisting with town meeting warnings, agendas, and reports. • Managing office operations, maintaining municipal records, and ensuring professional customer service to residents. • Collecting municipal revenues and working collaboratively with the Town Treasurer and Town Manager on financial tasks and reporting.Hours & Benefits: This is a 35-hour-per-week elected position offering:
