The Town of Hanover is looking for a collaborative, innovative, and community-oriented professional to become its next Director of Assessing. This role is essential in upholding the integrity and fairness of the town’s property assessment program and in building public trust through accuracy, transparency, and responsiveness.

The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, as the Director works closely with residents, business owners, Dartmouth College representatives, and local and regional officials. The Director must be a strong team player who excels in a collegial environment that values collaboration across departments, shared problem-solving, and innovation in service delivery.

The Town Manager strongly emphasizes teamwork among all department heads and municipal employees to provide efficient, high-quality public service. The ideal candidate will be a relationship builder who earns trust and respect through professionalism, empathy, and fairness.

Qualifications and Attributes

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree is required; a graduate degree in public administration, business administration, or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Experience: Demonstrated experience in municipal assessing, property valuation, or a closely related field, with certification as a Certified Assessor Supervisor or the ability to obtain certification within a reasonable time after appointment.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead a department, mentor staff, and foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly present complex information to the Selectboard, Town staff, and members of the public.
  • Engagement: A commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and service excellence.
  • Attitude: A positive, energetic approach that inspires confidence, collaboration, and pride in the assessing profession.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $101,069-$154,068.63, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
