CLASSIFICATION: Full Time, Hourly, REGULARLY ON CALL

REPORTS TO: Public Works Director and/or Road Commissioner(s); operates under general supervision of the Town Administrator and Selectboard.

 

The Town of Highgate is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and safety-minded individual to join our Public Works Department as a Public Works Crew Member. This position performs a variety of skilled and unskilled work related to road maintenance, equipment operation, construction, and other public works activities that support the Town’s infrastructure and facilities. PREFERRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Training or experience in any of the following areas:
    • Construction or road maintenance
    • Mechanics and equipment operation
    • Recordkeeping or related municipal work

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience or working knowledge of:
    • Paving, grading, and road maintenance techniques
    • Use and maintenance of heavy equipment and small tools
    • Drainage, culvert, and ditch construction
    • Snow plowing, salting, and sanding operations
  • Experience working as part of a crew or under supervision in a public works or construction setting

 

IMPORTANT SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor including bending, lifting, carrying, digging, and operating machinery in all weather conditions
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow direction from supervisors
  • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with coworkers, Town officials, and the public
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, follow safety procedures, and complete assigned tasks efficiently
  • Basic mechanical skills and ability to perform minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain all required licenses, certifications, and training
  • A valid CDL (minimum of a Class B), or ability to acquire a valid CDL, and a clean driving record. All CDL drivers and large equipment operators are subject to the Town's drug testing policies. 
  • Basic computer literacy, including use of email, Microsoft Office, and the ability to learn new software as requested

 

 

EXPECTED SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Assist in the maintenance, repair, and construction of Town roads, bridges, culverts, and drainage systems
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment including trucks, loaders, graders, excavators, and related tools
  • Perform snow plowing, sanding, and salting during winter months, often during nights, weekends, and emergency call-outs
  • Carry out roadside and facility maintenance including mowing, cleaning culverts, trimming brush, patching potholes, and maintaining signage
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of Town-owned equipment and facilities
  • Follow safe work practices and report safety concerns or equipment malfunctions promptly
  • Maintain accurate daily logs of work completed, materials used, and hours worked
  • Interact courteously and professionally with the public and respond to inquiries when appropriate
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Public Works Director, Road Commissioner, or Selectboard

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • This position is appointed by the Selectboard following required screenings, interviews, reference and background checks, physical exam, and drug test.
  • Compensation, benefits, and conditions of employment are established by the Selectboard.
  • A six (6) month probationary period applies to all new hires.

 

EVALUATIONS:

  • All Town of Highgate employees receive annual evaluations between July 1 and August 15.
  • A six-month probationary evaluation will also be conducted regardless of timing.
  • Evaluations are completed by the Public Works Director and/or Road Commissioner, as designated by the Selectboard.
  • Employees may review and comment on their evaluations.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

  • Hourly wage and benefits are established by the Selectboard.
  • Annual opportunities for wage review are based on employee evaluations.
  • Cost-of-living adjustments may be granted at the Selectboard’s discretion.
