Planning Director

 

The Town of Bennington, Vermont seeks a qualified and experienced Planning Director to lead the Town’s planning, zoning, and land use functions while supporting community and economic development initiatives. This senior management role reports to the Town Manager and works closely with the Community Development Director, Select Board, Planning Commission, Development Review Board, and community partners to shape Bennington’s future as a vibrant, inclusive, and resilient town.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee Town Plan, zoning bylaws, permitting, and development review.
  • Provide professional guidance on all aspects of land use planning, including housing, transportation, infrastructure, and natural resources.
  • Manage grants, budgets, consultant contracts, and planning studies.
  • Ensures compliance with Vermont planning statutes and regional planning requirements.
  • Support community revitalization, workforce development, and cultural initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred in Planning, Public Administration, or related field.
  • 3–5 years of progressively responsible planning/zoning/community development experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Vermont planning statutes and municipal governance.
  • Excellent communication, project management, and collaborative leadership skills.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $65,000 – $85,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
  • Benefits: Health, dental, vision, VMERS retirement, and paid leave.
