Title: Single Role Paramedic

Department: Fire Department 

Nature of Work:

The Brattleboro Fire Department is an all-hazard response agency with a strong emphasis on Emergency Medical Services (EMS). As a Single-Role Paramedic, you will serve as the primary provider of pre-hospital emergency care, responding to medical emergencies, stabilizing patients, and ensuring safe transport to definitive care. This role includes assisting with the operation and maintenance of department vehicles and equipment.

  • Residency Requirements: All Brattleboro Fire Department employees shall for the duration of their employment with the town, be required to have a place of abode in Brattleboro or approximately 60 minutes of Central Fire Station, 103 Elliot St., as determined by Google Maps. 

Work Schedule: Single Role Paramedic schedule is two (2) twenty-four (24) hour shifts (or 48 hours) per week. Occasional evenings or weekends on days off for training, special program events, or meetings may be required. 

Compensation: FY 2026 as per the current collective bargaining agreement.
40 hours at the regular rate $24.86 to $29.72 and 8 hours at the overtime $37.29 to $44.58 with a potential of a bi-weekly incentive of $51.71 to $61.82.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from fire department leadership but must be able to act without direct supervision in emergencies.

Supervision Exercised: Performs supervision as the lead medical provider on emergencies. 

Essential Responsibilities:

Includes, but is not limited to: 

  • Respond promptly to EMS calls, assess patient conditions, and deliver high-quality pre-hospital care.
  • Operate and maintain ambulances and medical equipment
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient care documentation.
  • Participate in EMS training, department training, and continuing education to maintain clinical proficiency.
  • Support public health initiatives, community outreach, and public education.
  • Assist with fire operations as needed, including technical rescue and hazardous materials response.
  • Maintain station cleanliness and equipment readiness.
  • Be available for callback during off-duty hours.
  • Maintain positive public relations and promote public safety.

Competencies Needed:

We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying, unless specifically stated as required.

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Must have and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Must have the ability to drive a motor vehicle and have access to reliable transportation.
  • Must hold a current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic (NRP) certification and be eligible for Vermont reciprocity.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical services.
  • Knowledge of Town layout or streets preferred; will be trained. 
  • Basic computer knowledge to include but not limited to Word and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn different reporting software.
  • Must be able to pass a thorough state and national criminal background checks, adult & child abuse registries, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) screening, full medical examination, drug test, and not be listed on the Office of Inspector General (OIG) List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE), to meet the minimum requirements for employment.
    • Must be able to pass the annual physical.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees from the Town as well as from other agencies and the public.
  • Must be able to establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, elected officials and other government agencies.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. 
    • Able to think quickly under pressure, react to always changing situations, and able to communicate effectively.
  • Must be able to learn and retain instructions, policies and procedures, and continue to learn new methods and stay current within the field.
  • Ability to actively support in providing a welcoming workplace and respectful environment for all, including cultural competency, while working effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.

Work Environment:

Paramedics are frontline healthcare professionals working in dynamic and often high-stress environments. The role requires physical stamina, mental resilience and the ability to make rapid decisions under pressure. You will work in all weather conditions and complex environments while providing critical care to our patients. Bending, reaching, pulling, lifting, and occasionally moving up to 100 pounds are all necessary. Paramedics must be able to tolerate high noise levels and interruptions in the daily routine. 

Union Status: Represented by Firefighters Association, Local 4439. New employees are on probation for 1 year from the date of hire or transfer.
