Title: Dual Role Firefighter/EMT/AEMT/Paramedic

Department: Fire Department 

Nature of work:  
The Brattleboro Fire is an all-hazard department, which includes EMS transport. This position is responsible for performing fire suppression, emergency medical, hazardous materials, technical rescue, response training, fire prevention activities and in the maintenance and operation of department apparatus and equipment. 

  • Residency Requirements: All Brattleboro Fire Department employees shall for the duration of their employment with the town, be required to have a place of abode in Brattleboro or  approximately 60 minutes of Central Fire Station, 103 Elliot St., as determined by Google Maps. 

Work Schedule: Platoons may be scheduled as examples:

  • On-duty for twenty-four (24) continuous hours    1 day
  • Off-duty for forty-eight (48) continuous hours     2 days
  • Firefighters will receive one (1) paid Wellness Day (day off) every twenty-two days (22) on a rotating schedule. This is a twenty-two (22) day cycle (about three (3) weeks). All Firefighters must have a day off in each cycle for wellness. 

Compensation: FY 2025 per current collective bargaining agreement. 
Firefighter/EMT starting at $54,559.44, including certification incentives.
Firefighter/AEMT starting at $56,168.84, including certification incentives.
Firefighter/Paramedic starting at $59,353.84, including certification incentives.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from superior officers but must be able to act without direct supervision in emergencies.

Supervision Exercised:  Exercises supervision only when the employee is designated to act in the capacity of an officer in the absence of an officer.

Essential Responsibilities:

Includes but not limited to: 

  1. Drive and operate fire and rescue equipment; perform duties associated with fire suppression, medical emergencies, hazardous materials, technical rescue.
  2. Work in an IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) atmosphere.
  3. Responds to medical calls and provides patient care.
  4. Performs routine maintenance and cleaning work in the fire stations. 
  5. Clean and perform minor repairs on fire apparatus and equipment.
  6. Participates in training exercises and attends training schools as required.
  7. Respond to the firehouse for callback when necessary.
  8. Performs fire prevention,  public education and public relations duties as assigned.
  9. Complete all written forms and documentation as required.
  10. Maintain positive public relations and promote fire safety.
  11. Attend classes, seminars, and workshops to maintain and improve job knowledge and skills.

Competencies Needed: 

We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying, unless specifically stated as required. 

  • Must hold a valid CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) within 1 year of employment.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent. 
  • Must have and maintain a valid, motor vehicle operator’s license. 
  • Must hold a Vermont recognized Firefighter I certification.
  • Must hold a current Vermont recognized Emergency Medical Technician certification or greater. 
    • A current Vermont recognized Emergency Medical Responder certification may be approved by the Fire Chief with other valid Firefighter certifications. 
  • Passing score on written examination through the National Firefighter Test by Standard & Associates of General Fire and EMS knowledge.
  • Knowledge of firefighting techniques, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical care and procedures appropriate to certification level.
  • Knowledge of Town layout or streets and hydrant system. 
  • Knowledge of buildings in the districts, including the presence of detection systems and hazardous material.
  • Basic computer knowledge to include but not limited to Word and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn different reporting software.
  • Must be able to pass a thorough state and national criminal background checks, adult & child abuse registries, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) screening, firefighter medical examination, drug test and not be listed on the Office of Inspector General (OIG) List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE), to meet the minimum prerequisites requirements for employment.
    • Must be able to pass the annual firefighter physical.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees from the Town     as well as from other agencies and the public.
  • Must be able to establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, elected officials and other government agencies.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. 
    • Able to think quickly under pressure, react to always changing situations, and able to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to actively support in providing a welcoming workplace and respectful environment for all, including cultural competency, while working effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Must be able to learn and retain instructions, policies and procedures and continue to learn new methods and stay current within the field.

Work Environment: Firefighters should be strong team members, able to think quickly under pressure, react to always changing situations, and able to communicate effectively. Must be physically fit to perform the duties of the position, have good overall physical health, personal mobility, and the ability to work over long periods of time in less-than-ideal situations and in all weather conditions. Must be able to work from heights and in confined spaces. Bending, reaching, pulling, lifting, and occasionally moving up to 100 pounds are all necessary. Basic use of computer and keyboard. Must be able to work in a high-noise environment with frequent interruptions. Occasional evenings or weekends on day(s) off for trainings, special program events or meetings. Must have the ability to drive a motor vehicle and have access to reliable transportation. 

Union Status: Represented by Firefighters Association, Local 4439. New employees are on probation for 1 year from date of hire or transfer.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Employee (salaried with OT as approved or required).
